Shawn and Jalen are a retired couple who own a beach front house in Cannon Beach, Oregon that is in major need of a kitchen remodel.
The concept of their kitchen design is to create a bright and lively space that can entertain any friends, family, or other visitors. The finishes used throughout the kitchen bring a natural warmth to the space and connects the space to the environment. Wood beams and stone counters resemble the floating driftwood on the rocky shoreline which are natural elements of the location that are appreciated by the Hill family. Layered cabinet lighting will provide an elegant look that brightens up the room. The kitchen layout is made to provide ease of traffic, room for two active cooks, seating for family and visitors, and plenty of storage. The finishes are used to create balance in color and texture throughout the whole kitchen, thus forming the sense of unity within the space.
Shawn and Jalen’s home remodel includes the bathroom on the second floor. The design of the bathroom gives a spacious, spa-like appeal to serves guests and visiting family.
Shawn and Jalen’s home remodel includes the bathroom on the second floor. Because the two agreed that they do not need a lot of storage space for the guest bathroom, much of the space will be used to create a separate soaking tub and a walk-in shower. The old closets will be torn down to allow the construction of a toilet compartment on the south wall and a vanity sink on the north wall with extra space for seating. The north wall will be moved inward ten inches to prevent from having to completely relocate the vent stack placed there.
The bathroom was designed to be a spacious, spa-like area for guests and visiting family. The colors and materials used in the bathroom bring a modern twist to the color scheme used in the kitchen and throughout the house. Keeping an interest in using the wood tones to resemble driftwood on the neighboring beach, the cabinetry, shelving, and stool top are made from beautifully stained rustic alder wood. The walls of the shower share this rustic look in the use of porcelain tile with a wood grain appearance. The floor of the shower is a stone pebble floor that resembles the stone along the cliffside beaches, as does the granite countertop which matches that of the kitchen. The mix of matte black in the mirror and plumbing fixtures adds to the modern appeal of the room. This is also accomplished through the wall mounted vanity which creates a floating plane along the wall, similar to the floating planes seen commonly in modern architecture.
